Russell himself was doing an excellent job at absurdly low pay, because he was attuned to the meaning and demands of the struggle. Though he later divorced himself from the radical movement, and wrote a number of biographies of famous Americans (Franklin, Emerson), I always remembered him for his integrity, tolerance, and respect for the struggles of the workers.

John Macy, a journalist and writer on social problems, the husband of Anne Sullivan (teacher of Helen Keller), was humble in his desire to help. He assisted with the accounting, printed signs, typed our leaflets, and marched in our picket line. A friendly, humorous, gracious man, he came for a few days and left behind him a warm glow of sympathy and understanding of the need for a reconstructed social order.

Most dedicated to the idea of a just social order was Bob Bakeman, an ex-minister. He took the teachings of Jesus literally and could not accept the inconsistencies and hypocrisy of institutionalized religion. He gave up his church, embraced Socialism, helped wherever possible in workers’ organizations, and brought a crusader’s spirit to every strike. He was young and eloquent and joyous, as if drawing the very essence of his being from his identity with the poor, the exploited, and the persecuted.
